Profession Knowledge Points

This is a comprehensive guide for getting profession Knowledge Points (KP) in the Dragonflight expansion. Updated for patches 10.0.7 – 10.2.

You can use Tama’s Weak Aura as an in-game checklist for most of these sources.

First crafts & GATHERS:

Crafting a recipe for the first time gives 1 KP.

Gathering and overloading each unique ore/herb prefix (such as “Molten” or “Windswept”) for the first time gives 1 KP.

TREASURES

Crafting professions have treasures scattered across the Dragon Isles that give +3 KP each. These items can’t be used until skill 25. Treasure location by profession.

Zaralek Cavern treasures (added in 10.1)

Emerald Dream treasures & gathering updates (added in 10.2)

SECRET TRAINERS:

Every profession has one NPC that will give you +10 KP (gathering) or +5 KP (crafting) for just finding them and talking to them. You’ll need to have at least skill 25 before they will train you. Secret trainer locations

REKNOWN:

Artisan’s Consortium: upon gaining the preferred, valued, and esteemed reknonwn levels, you can buy a book that gives 10 KP for crafting professions or 15 for gathering ones. The books are bought from Rabul, with Artisan’s Mettle, and cost more at higher renown levels. Rep for this faction is gained primarily through weekly profession quests. Note: as of 10.0.7, unlocking access to all books and recipes sold by Rabul is account-wide, and the Artisan Consortium’s contract gives 150 rep per world quest.

Main Dragon Isles Factions: each profession has a faction associated with it that will reward +5 KP for that profession at renown levels 14 & 24 (or 23 for Dragonscale Expedition). Herbalism (and sometimes mining) gets 10 points instead of 5.

Loamm Niffen: a new faction introduced in 10.1 rewards books for every profession except engineering at renown 12 – all of which grant 10 KP.

VENDOR:

Ponzo, added in patch 10.1, will sell you 2 books for each profession that grant 5 knowledge points each. They cost 35 & 90 barter bricks. See the article on 10.1 crafting updates for more information on barter bricks.

Points possible per week:

If you do all the things listed below, and don’t get any rare drops:

  • Alchemy, Engineering, Enchanting & Skinning: 12
  • Mining & Herbalism: 13
  • BS, Inscription, JC, LW, Tailoring : 15
WEEKLY PROFESSION QUESTS (3-9 KP):

The quests are all given by NPCs in Valdrakken.

Gathering professions will have 1 quest that gives 3KP – your profession trainer will ask you to turn in items that are gathered with that profession. The items can be bought on the AH if needed. This quest becomes available at skill 50.

Crafting professions have 1-3 quests, depening on your skill level and the profession.

  1. Go on an adventure (3KP): An NPC to the left of the craft order station will give you a quest that usually involves collecting random drops from killing specific mob types in the world, which can be found in a handfull of locations. This quest becomes available at skill 25. As of patch 10.1, some of these quests take place in the Zaralek Caverns, and are turned in at Loamm.
  2. Make a thing (3KP): you will be asked by your profession trainer to make 2-6 items. You can buy the item from the AH if needed, you don’t have to make it yourself. This quest becomes available at skill 50.
  3. Fill crafting orders (3KP): An NPC to the right of the craft order station will give you a quest to fill 2-4 craft orders, depending on your profession. These can be public, guild, or personal orders. This quest becomes available at skill 25. Alchemy & enchanting do not have this quest type.

Note: Engineering only gets 2 KP from all of the above quest types.

WEEKLY DRACONIC TREATISES (1 kp):

Scribes can make Draconic Treatises- which can be used to gain 1 KP per profession per week. They only come in one quality, so these are usually easy to get from public work orders.

WEEKLY CRAFTING DROPS (2 items, 1 kp ea):

These items have a chance to drop when looting expedition packs or digging in disturbed dirt (both requires renown 5 with Dragonscale Expedition). Digging in dirt requires a shovel, which can be bought from the Dragonscale Expedition vendors, or made by a blacksmith.

WEEKLY GATHERING DROPS (6+ items, 1+ kp ea):

Six items are guaranteed to drop for you per week if you do enough gathering. The first five are worth 1KP, and the 6th is worth more. Perception seems to improve their drop rate. You can also rarely find an item that doesn’t count toward this weekly total which has a different naming scheme – it’s possible these only drop from element infused nodes/creatures.

WEEKLY Forbidden reach rares (1 kp):

The Forbidden Reach, a zone added in patch 10.0.7, has one summonable rare per profession that you can loot once per week for a knowledge point and artisan’s mettle. To summon the rare, you need a “curio” of the matching profession, which drops from activities in the zone (they can also be found on the AH). More about profession rares & curios

DRAGON SHARDS OF KNOWLEDGE (1 kp):

Dragon Shards of Knowledge are rare drops and can be turned in to Khadin for 1 KP in the profession of your choice. You’ll need to do a quest chain before you can use them. You can get 4 shards from that quest chain. If you’ve done the chain on your main, alts can skip the quests, but still get the shards.

Shards can also can drop from expedition packs, disturbed dirt, treasure chests, rares mobs, weekly reward chests, dungeon chests, etc.. There’s no weekly limit on how many you can get, but they’re very rare, so consider them a nice bonus rather than something to expect.

Darkmoon faire quests (3 kp):

The Darkmoon Faire happens once a month, and offers 1 quest per profession that gives 3KP. More about Darkmoon Faire quests
