Gathering

New node types:

  • Herbalism = Overgrown
  • Mining = Living

Overload effect: you get a mix of the 4 herb types or the 2 ore types. You don’t get any additional reagents, such as rousing elements.

Non-overload effect: upon gathering, the herb/rock uproots itself, does an AoE knockback, and runs away. You will need to channel on the fleeing herb/rock before it vanishes to get your loot, or credit for a first gather. The amount you gather is connected to either the length of the channel or being able to do multiple gathering channels off – not sure which. The knockback can be annoying because it aggros all nearby mobs (even neutral ones) and puts you in combat, and makes it harder to get a full channel in. If you’re not mounted, the knockback can kill you if you’re near a cliff or in a tree. This was cute at first, but quickly became annoying.

Herbing in the Emerald Dream: I have yet to see any rich soil, or herb types that give you rousing elements or spores, but writhebark is far more abundant here than previous zones. Given all the missing options, poor visibility due to trees, and cranky herbs that don’t want to be picked, this zone kinda stinks for herb farming.

Minig in the Emerald Dream: The full range of previous mining node types are available in the Emerad Dream, including metamorphic.

Double gathering in the Emerald Dream: Metamorphic rocks exist in the Emerald Dream, but I haven’t seen any Lambent herbs, so I don’t think it’s possible to get propagating spores from the new zone.

Gathering + Pathfinder Achievement

Being able to gather while on a non-dragonflying mount gives us some advantages:

  • hover-gathering – you don’t have to land, so you don’t aggro mobs that have no ranged attacks (sadly only works for mining, and not herbing)
  • altitude changes – you don’t need to skip a node because regaining your altitude will cost too much vigor.
  • map usage – if you’re looking for something specific, you have time to mouseover nodes on your minimap and see what they are before flying out of range, and you can pause in hover mode to refer to your main map without flying into a mountain.
  • Zaqali Caldera in Zaralek Caverns is a great mining area, but annoying because they constantly try to shoot you out of the air. They don’t do that if you’re on a non-dragonflying mount 🙂

I like to swap back and forth between mount types and use dragonriding for rapid travel, and an older mount for precision work or frequent vertical changes, or when my dragon runs out of vigor.
